How to build Portal MomentumLesson 4: How to Build Portal Momentum

By Ralph Budelman

Let us now learn about launching the portal and getting visitors coming to the site. We will focus on using the search engines to do this rather than using paid advertising.

Advertising costs have been the downfall of many dotcom portals so we will avoid this approach. A large number of people can be attracted to the portal without spending much money. They just need to find the portal when they do a search in Yahoo or one of the many other search engines. But using search engines exclusively is becoming more difficult with each passing day. This is because there are so many new sites and pages entering the search engines that is difficult to get noticed. But with some hard work we can get visitors coming to our portal.

Our plan in this lesson, is to build quality content and submit these pages to the search engines. In this way we can provide information that will attract people to our portal. For example, suppose our portal was for new mothers. Then we should try and determine what new mothers would enter into Yahoo or hotbot or other search engine when they need information.

We then Build or buy content to fit this need. Let's just say a new mother wants information about baby formula. She might enter "baby formula" into Yahoo. If our portal has a good article, book review or discussion forum about baby formula then this mother might find our listing in Yahoo and click to our portal.

Yea we have a visitor! We are going to briefly learn about the kinds of content to add.
