Compare Unix (Perl/CGI scripts) Vs Windows NT (ASP scripts)
Chapter3: Conclusion- Choose Wisely
Technically, Windows NT Server 4.0 in no match for any UNIX operating system. But UNIX is not as user friendly as NT.
NT and UNIX can communicate with many different types of computers. They both can secure sensitive data and keep unauthorized users off the network. Essentially, both meet the minimum requirements for operating systems functioning in a networked environment.
Put briefly, UNIX can do anything that NT can do and more. Furthermore the Internet is built upon UNIX servers not on NTs. The reliability of these UNIX servers has been proven. But NT is an emerging technology and Microsoft will be a powerful force in this direction.
Windows NT's pricing can be found at Microsoft's Windows NT server's pricing page. If you are interested you may want to read about the hidden cost of Windows NT. Microsoft is coming with the new product Windows 2000 might have more support for ASP.
UNIX is almost free. A good example is Linux. Linux is an open source software. That means you can get the source code of this complete operating system and can modify it.
Both CGI and ASP components are available on the web for free.
Before choosing your webserver think about the other aspects of the operating system, the cost of the server, the scripts, your expertise in working with the server and your technical team. Switching from one webserver to an entirely different one may be difficult. Choose wisely!
