Microsoft Power BI for Office 365

Microsoft’s been in the Business Intelligence (BI) since late 90’s , but has lacked a credible mobile (tablet-based) BI solution and has only exposed small pieces of its BI stack in its Office 365 and Windows Azure cloud platforms. In a recent release Microsoft fills the mobile and cloud BI gaps and has added value to its BI stack. In its newest release, Power BI, they announces general availability of business intelligence tool for excel and Microsoft Office 365, ie, self-service business intelligence for all your data.

Mainly aimed at business users, Power BI help the users create reports and derive insights based on data in Excel as well as share and collaborate on those insights in Office 365. Excel features data modelling while Office 365 offers real-time collaboration.

Power BI suite consists of five different components which include:

Power Query: offers easy discover and connection to data from public and corporate data sources

Power Pivot: allows for self-service data modelling

Power View: self-service data visualization

Power Map: explore and navigate geospatial data on a 3D map experience in Excel

Through this release, Microsoft is promising several cloud based capabilities. Business users are always updated with latest reports, quickly find and share data and reports with colleagues and collaborate over BI results, real-time access to BI sites, data can be accessible through the browser in HTML 5 or through touch-optimized mobile application, with the Q&A features, people can type questions they have of the data in natural language and the system will interpret the question and present answers in the form of interactive visualizations.

Microsoft Power BI is an Excel feature, and traditionally spreadsheets have been relatively static. But Microsoft has made it possible to perform scheduled data refreshes so that live reports always reflect current data. Part of the allure of Microsoft’s Power BI is the extensive data visualization available in the dashboards, which makes the data digestible and more intuitive for business-line users.

You can add Power BI for Office 365 to your existing Office 365 subscription, or sign up for a standalone subscription. Power BI is the best way that enable the user to visualize data, share discoveries and collaborate in intuitive new ways.

Microsoft reveals Office 365 business road map

In a bid to publicly lure more customers to the platform, Microsoft unveils a business road map to future Office 365 enhancements and additions. The business public road map provides you with a way to learn more about upcoming updates before the change comes to your service. Microsoft new office 365 road map offer the users live updates on which new features have shipped, which are rolling out and which are under development.

Microsoft on its website has divided the Office 365 for business for road map into five categories named, Launched, Rolling out, in Development, Cancelled and Previous Releases. As per Microsoft, the new release provides the user a way to learn more about upcoming updates before the change comes to your service.

Along with Office 365 road map, in an attempt to forge a more open relationship with customers, it also announced an opt-in program called First Release that gives customers early access to new features.

Both the road map and First Release are targeted at business and institutional customers, not consumers. Consequently, Office 365 for business road map does not apply to Office 365 Home or Office 365 Personal.
